Materials and tools for service of the battery
1. Protective mask. It is intended for protection of eyes against possible hit of the particles impregnated with acid when cleaning with a brush of the places struck with corrosion. 2. Baking soda. It is used in the form of water solution for acid neutralization. 3. Technical vaseline. It is intended for greasing of poles of the battery for the purpose of protection against corrosion. 4. The adaptation for cleaning of plugs and poles of the battery. The wire brush intended for reliable cleaning of plugs and poles of the battery. 5. Acidproof washers. Put on on battery poles under plugs of cables and are intended for protection of plugs from corrosion.
|
6. Stripper. It is intended for a detachment of plugs of cables from battery poles after an otvorachivaniye of nuts and bolts in case of the complicated removal of plugs. Application of a stripper allows to remove plugs without damage of poles. 7. The adaptation for cleaning of plugs and poles of the battery, appointment same, as at the adaptation No. 4, differs in the changed design. 8. Rubber gloves. One more means of protection, are intended for protection of hands against acid burns at service of the battery. |
General procedure of check
PERFORMANCE ORDER |
1. A main objective of care of the battery is fast and reliable start of the engine. However, before service of the battery be convinced that you have all necessary equipment for safe performance of work near the battery (see rice. Materials and tools for service of the battery). |
2. At service of the battery it is always necessary to observe precautionary measures. Before works stop the engine and disconnect the battery from weight. |
3. From the battery hydrogen, explosive and combustible gas is emitted. Therefore it is forbidden to use naked flame near the battery (smoking, check of spark plugs, etc.). The battery has to be charged in the ventilated room. |
4. Poisonous and caustic sulfuric acid is a part of electrolyte. Do not allow hit of acid on eyes, skin, in a gullet and on clothes. During the work near the battery put on a protective mask. Do not allow to the battery of children. |
5. Check a condition of the battery external survey. Watch a condition of a protective rubber cover of a positive pole of the battery (if the cover is provided by a design). The cover has to close a pole and the plug completely. Check existence of traces of corrosion on connections of the battery, cracks on the case and on a cover, watch durability of fastening of plugs. Check a condition of cables of the battery on all their length, watch emergence on isolation of cracks and traces of a mastication. |
|
6. At detection of traces of corrosion in the form of the white shelled raid, especially round poles, the battery should be removed for cleaning. |
|
7. A key release bolts of plugs, and disconnect at first a cable from weight and remove plugs. Sometimes, in case of damage lysok nuts corrosion, are applied to removal special passatizh. Always the first disconnect a cable of a negative pole, and attach in the last turn. |
8. Then turn off a bolt of a clamping bracket of fastening of the battery, remove a bracket and get the battery from a motor compartment. |
|
9. Carefully clear plugs of cables of corrosion by a special brush for cleaning of plugs and poles and wash out warm soda solution (internally the opening of the plug has a cone form for dense contact with a battery pole therefore do not remove excess material). Wash out battery poles the same solution, however keep in mind that solution should not get in the battery. |
10. When cleaning plugs, poles and covers of the battery always put on gloves and a protective mask, in order to avoid hit of any solution on hands and eyes. Work in old clothes, as at hit by the even diluted chamois of acid inevitably fabric burning. |
|
11. At strong defeat of poles corrosion clear them the adaptation. Carefully wash out the distilled water all cleared sites. After cleaning of poles the last have to be absolutely pure and to look brilliant. irrespective of a way of cleaning. |
|
12. Be convinced of purity of a tray of the battery and integrity of a bolt and nut of fastening of the battery. Check reliability of an inhaling of a bolt and nut of fastening of the battery (are specified by shooters). If the battery was removed, before its installation be convinced that on a tray I am absent any foreign subjects. Do not make big efforts at an inhaling of a bolt or a nut of a bracket of fastening of the battery. |
|
Check of level of electrolyte
PERFORMANCE ORDER |
1. On batteries with the turned-out traffic jams of sections the level of electrolyte has to be checked (and if necessary and to be restored) in established periods. If the car is operated at the increased ambient temperature, it is necessary to check electrolyte level more often. In unattended batteries (on such batteries usually there is a marking on the top cover) restoration of level of electrolyte it is not required, the battery has a non-demountable design. |
2. The case of some batteries is made of transparent material. Two marks corresponding to the admissible lower and top level of electrolyte are applied on the case. If the car is on an equal platform, electrolyte level has to be in each section of the battery constantly between the specified marks. Level of electrolyte has to be in those batteries in which the case is made of opaque material, slightly above a protective lattice of section. |
3. In need of filling arrive as follows. Turn out traffic jams of sections and accurately add the distilled or deionized water in each section to normal level. Excess of level is not allowed. After restoration of level put traffic jams of sections into place. |
|
Cleaning
PERFORMANCE ORDER |
1. Corrosion traces on details of fastening of the battery, the case of the battery and in adjacent places can be removed with water solution of baking soda with the subsequent careful washing by the distilled water. |
2. All metal details of a body struck with corrosion should be painted zinc soil and enamel. |
|
Charging
PERFORMANCE ORDER |
1. If the battery is discharged to such an extent that is not able to start the engine, the best means of restoration is charging small current. If short trips, i.e. intervals between start-up of the engine small are made, it is recommended to recharge the battery. Recharge of the battery is especially necessary in the winter when conditions of start-up of the engine worsen and load of the battery because of more frequent inclusion of various consumers increases. |
2. For charging of the battery it is most expedient to use the low-power charger (with current 1-2 A) sometimes called by the "drop" rectifier. These devices are the most reliable and almost do not do harm to the battery, besides cost their low. For the accelerated charging of the battery it is possible to use also the silnotochny device, however, current of a charge should not exceed 1/10 capacities of the battery expressed in ampere-hours. The accelerated charging is applied to fast reduction of the battery in readiness for start-up of the engine (in 1–2 hours). However, the accelerated charging can lead to failure of obviously serviceable battery and apply such mode follows only for start-up of the engine in emergency situation. |
3. The most optimum time of a charge of the battery has to be specified in the instruction to the charger. Approximate time of a charge the "drop" rectifier makes 12–16 hours. |
