GENERAL INFORMATION

Elements of a back drum brake

1. Valve of production of air
2. Piston
3. Cover
4. Cap
5. Spring
6. Washer
7. Lever of a brake shoe
8. Lever of the emergency brake
9. With-shaped washer
10. Back brake shoe
11. Coupling spring
12. Adjusting mechanism
13. Spring of the adjusting lever
14. Cap
15. Clamping spring
16. Cap
17. Front brake shoe
18. Cap
19. Pin

Prevention

Brake shoes need to be replaced at once on two wheels – never replace brake shoes only on one wheel.

The dust formed as a result of wear of brake shoes contains the asbestos hazardous to health. Do not inhale it.

Do not use solvents on the basis of gasoline for cleaning of brakes. Use only the cleaner which is specially intended for cleaning of brakes.

When replacing brake shoes it is necessary to replace returnable and clamping springs also. Because of that springs are exposed to a constant overheat / cooling, they lose rigidity through a certain period of time that leads to that the brake shoe can not depart from a drum and wear out much quicker.

Replacement

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Turn off nuts of fastening of wheels, lift back part of the car and establish it on support. Block forward wheels in order that the car incidentally did not sweep.
2. Release the emergency brake.
3. Remove a wheel.

Prevention

It is necessary to replace at once all four brake shoes of back drum brakes. Not to mix them, work on each of wheels in turn.

4. Note the provision of installation of the brake drum in relation to a nave in order that the drum kept dynamic balance after installation.
5. If the brake drum hangs on brake shoes because of excessive wear, insert two screw-drivers into an opening of a guard of a back brake, will take away the adjusting lever from a cogwheel and turn it to take away brake shoes back.
6. Before removal of any elements of the mechanism of brakes, install the pallet under a brake and wash out the mechanism of a brake the cleaning liquid, wait until it dries; do not use compressed air for a sduvaniye of the dust formed as a result of wear of brake shoes (the nave is removed for descriptive reasons).
7. Disconnect a returnable spring from a front brake shoe.
8. Get the second end of a spring from an opening in a back block and remove the regulirosochny mechanism together with a spring.
9. By means of the tool for compression of springs remove a clamping spring, having pressed on it and having turned on a quarter of a turn.
10. Remove an external cap, a spring and an internal cap.
11. Get a pin through an opening in a board of a back brake.
12. Remove a front brake shoe and disconnect a coupling spring from a back brake shoe.
13. Remove a clamping spring of a back block, caps and a pin.
14. Turn a back block and take away a spring from the lever of the emergency brake.
15. Disconnect a rope of the emergency brake from the lever.
16. Put a back brake shoe on a pure desktop and disconnect a spring of the adjusting lever from a block.
17. Remove the With-shaped washer (do not lose the washer located under it).
18. Remove the lever of the emergency brake and the adjusting lever from an old brake shoe.
19. Install the lever of the emergency brake and the adjusting lever on a new back brake shoe and fix them by means of a new With-shaped washer (do not forget about installation of a usual washer).
20. Establish a ledge on back part of the adjusting lever in an opening of the lever of a brake shoe.
21. Turn the lever of a brake shoe back and press it to a block.
22. Hook on the short end of a spring of the adjusting lever for the lever of a brake shoe.
23. Hook on the long end of a spring for an opening in a back brake shoe.
24. Apply a layer of high-temperature greasing on a board of a back brake in those places where it concerns brake shoes.
25. Insert a pin of a clamping spring of a back brake shoe into an opening in a board of a back brake.
26. Connect a rope of the emergency brake to the lever of the emergency brake.
27. Establish a back brake shoe into place, insert a pin into an opening in a block and establish an internal cap on a pin.
28. Establish a clamping spring and an external cap.
29. Squeeze a spring by means of the tool for compression of springs, turn an external cap on a quarter of a turn and record it.
30. Install the adjusting mechanism on a place and insert it into an opening of the adjusting lever which was in advance installed on a back brake shoe.
31. Hook on a coupling spring for a back block.
32. Hook on a coupling spring for a forward block.
33. Establish a front brake shoe on a place and hook on both ends of a returnable spring for openings in forward and back blocks.
34. Establish a pin, a clamping spring, internal and external caps of a clamping spring of a front brake shoe and record an external cap of a spring by means of the tool for compression of springs.
35. If the brake drum is not removed from a half shaft or from brake shoes, check that the car was removed from the emergency brake. If the drum still is not removed, it is necessary to take away brake shoes back (see item 5).
36. Before installation of a drum it needs to be examined on existence of cracks, scratches and firm inclusions which look as colourless spots. If they cannot be removed by means of an emery paper, or there are other damages from described above, the brake drum needs to be given to auto repair shop for restoration. Every time when dismantling brakes is recommended to carry out restoration of a surface of the brake drum. Restoration of a surface will eliminate probability of emergence of a radial beating in a drum.
37. If the brake drum wore out so that it cannot be restored, without having exceeded the most admissible diameter (specified on a drum), it is necessary to get the new brake drum.
38. If you decide not to restore a drum surface, it is necessary to remove at least luster from its surface by means of an emery paper. Processing of a surface needs to be carried out roundabouts.
39. Install the brake drum on a half shaft.
40. Establish a wheel and put the fixing clamps. By means of the screw-driver inserted into an opening of a guard of a back brake (see item 5) turn a cogwheel of the adjusting mechanism so that brake shoes began to concern a drum at its rotation, then turn off a cogwheel so that blocks ceased to concern a drum. Lower the car and tighten nuts of fastening of wheels till the demanded moment of an inhaling specified in the section of technical characteristics in the corresponding chapter.
41. Stop the car by means of brakes several times, moving to lobbies and a backing, and put the car on the emergency brake several times finally to adjust back brakes.
42. Check work of brakes before normal operation of the car.
