3.1.2.16. Piston rings

Installation
PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Before installation of new piston rings check a gap in their joints. It is meant that the gap between a ring and a platform of a landing flute is already checked and meets standards (see subsection 3.1.2.9).
2. Spread out pistons assembled with rods and new piston rings in such order that the set of rings corresponded to this cylinder on which the gap will be measured in a joint.
3. Insert the top ring into the first cylinder and push the piston bottom inside so that the ring in the cylinder became perpendicular to its axis. The ring has to be in the lower part of the cylinder, in the situation corresponding to the lower dead point.
4. The gap is measured in a joint of a piston ring by probes and is equal to the total thickness of the probes inserted into a gap. Probes have to slip in a gap under small effort. Compare result to standard value. If the gap is more or less established, double-check correctness of selection of rings.
5. If the gap is too small, replace rings. It is forbidden to increase a gap in a joint of a piston ring by a podpilivaniye of end faces.
6. The gap should not exceed the top limit specified in subsection 3.1.2.1. Double-check correctness of selection of rings to your engine.
7. Repeat measurements for each ring installed in the first cylinder and also for each of the rings installed in other cylinders. Store pistons and rings so that they were installed in that cylinder in which the gap in a joint was checked.
8. After selection of rings and measurement of a gap, a ring it is possible to establish on pistons.
9. The oil scraper ring is established by the first (the lowermost on the piston). This ring consists of three details. Establish a divider / dilator in a flute. If on the piston the fixing pin preventing provorachivany rings on the piston is provided, be convinced available a pin which vpressovyvatsya in an opening in a piston flute.
10. Establish the lower disk of an oil scraper ring. At installation of oil scraper disks it is impossible to use the adaptation for clothing of rings as their breakage is possible. Insert one end of an oil scraper disk into a piston flute, between a divider and a horizontal platform of a flute, and, strongly holding the end of a disk inserted into a flute, bring a finger to a flute the second end of a disk.
11. Working in the same way, establish the second disk of an oil scraper ring.
12. After installation of all details of an oil scraper ring be convinced that the top and lower disks are freely turned in a flute.
13. The average ring (number 2) is established by the following. On this ring the tag which has to be turned towards the piston bottom is stamped.

Prevention

Always arrive according to the instruction on packing of piston rings, different manufacturers can have different designations of the correct orientation of a ring. Do not mix the top and lower compression rings as they have various profiles of cross section.

14. Install the adaptation for clothing of piston rings, be convinced that tags are directed towards the bottom of the piston and move the corresponding ring to an average flute of the piston. Do not part ring joints on bigger distance than it is required for its passing over the piston.
15. Similarly establish the top compression ring. Be convinced that tags are directed up. Do not mix the top and lower compression rings.
16. Similarly establish rings on other pistons.
